Rungta University Researchers Granted Indian Patent for Groundbreaking Solar-Powered Smart Medical Coat

[BHILAI, CHHATTISGARH] – Pushing the boundaries of Health-Tech and wearable innovation, researchers at Rungta College of Engineering & Technology (RCET) and Rungta International Skills University  have officially been granted a patent by the Government of India for a revolutionary “Smart Medical Coat.”

The patent (No. 579396), titled “A Wearable Coat with Biosensors Capable of Identifying Health Parameters and Fluid in the Lungs,” was spearheaded by lead inventors Dr. Sourabh Rungta and Sandeep D. Bhad. This breakthrough marks a significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in advanced medical diagnostics.

Innovation That Breathes: Solar-Powered Diagnostics

Unlike traditional wearable trackers, this smart coat is crafted from advanced Solar Fabric integrated with photovoltaic textile fibers. This allows the garment to generate its own energy, powering an array of non-invasive nano-sensors.

The coat provides real-time monitoring of:

  • Critical Detection: Fluid accumulation in the lungs and heart (Pleural effusion/Edema).

  • Vital Signs: Heart rate, Oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$), Blood glucose, Body temperature, and Blood flow.

  • Advanced Analytics: EEG-ECG modules, GSR (stress tracking), and voice-frequency analysis to detect sleep disorders, anxiety, and behavioral shifts.

Real-Time Emergency Response

The system is designed to save lives when every second counts. If any health parameter crosses a dangerous threshold—such as a sudden drop in oxygen or irregular heart rhythms—the coat triggers an immediate local alarm and transmits emergency alerts to doctors and family members via a cloud-based mobile platform.

Impact on Rural & Preventive Healthcare

“This technology is a boon for remote areas and the elderly,” stated the research team. By enabling 24×7 remote monitoring, the smart coat allows doctors to make life-saving decisions via telemedicine, reducing the need for constant hospitalization and helping in the early detection of chronic risks like hypertension, diabetes, and even cancer.

With this patent, Rungta University solidifies its position as a premier Knowledge Hub in Chhattisgarh, proving that homegrown innovation can solve global healthcare challenges.
